SRINAGAR, India – Thousands of people turned out in Indian Kashmir Friday to pay tribute to two slain separatist leaders as a one-day strike called to mark the occasion closed shops and businesses.
The moderate faction of the Himalayan region's main separatist alliance, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, called the strike to commemorate Molvi Mohammed Farooq and Abdul Gani Lone.
Farooq, the chief cleric in the region's main mosque, was murdered by unidentified gunmen at his residence in Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital, on May 21, 1990.
Lone was killed in 2002 during a function to mark Farooq's death at Srinagar's "martyrs graveyard."
