PDP demands action on ''unmarked'' graves, release of prisoners
Srinagar, Aug 25 ; Opposition People's Democratic Party today staged a protest demonstration here demanding release of political prisoners and visible action against those responsible for the unmarked graves in Kashmir.PDP activists led by party president Mehbooba Mufti marched from its headquarters near Pologround to the Residency Road here before they were stopped by a heavy posse of police personnel deployed near Regal Chowk."This is a protest against official repression," PDP spokesman Nayeem Akhtar told PTI.He said today's protest was to demand a proper investigation into the alleged existence of unmarked graves at 38 sites containing more than 2,000 bodies in north Kashmir, which, he claimed, State Human Rights Commission's investigative wing had said existed "beyond doubt"."We are demanding that visible and punitive action should be taken against those who are responsible for these unmarked graves," Akhtar said.He said the party also demanded that identification of the youth, buried in these unmarked graves, should be done so that "the uncertainties their families have lived through ends"."It is a national shame that we have mass graves here and what is more shameful is that the entire civil society and political parties in India are silent on this issue," Akhtar said.PDP also demanded unconditional release of all political prisoners and youths arrested for protests following last year's summer unrest. He termed as "mere cosmetic exercise" the release of 12 political prisoners by the government yesterday. The party activists later held a brief sit-in at Regal Chowk before dispersing peacefully.
